About this Project
Thanks to the popularity of movies and pop culture, sharks have gotten a bad reputation as being mindless, man-eating machines that stalk the oceans in search of humans for prey. This is especially true for the ocean’s largest predatory shark: the great white. Thanks to movies like JAWS, great whites have been the source of fear for many people, since such movies do these amazing animals a severe injustice. In truth, sharks the world over are widely misunderstood, with great whites taking the brunt of the public’s fear given their spot as one of the ocean’s top predators. However, they are not the killing machines Hollywood has made them out to be, but rather they are a fascinating and crucial part of the ocean’s ecosystem.

This infographic aims to shed light on what a great white shark really is with details about their lives, spanning from birth to adulthood. Covering specifics such as their habitat and range, eating habits, and biology, this infographic provides context and knowledge to help reduce the burden on these predators that are now considered as vulnerable to extinction thanks to illegal hunting, overfishing, destruction of their habitats, and other forms of human interference.

Sketches & Planning
After gathering a great deal of information about the habits and life of great white sharks, I spent some time sketching out ideas. First I created a handful of wireframes to give me an idea of how to lay out the different sections of information I had put together. Then, once I had the data organized into relevant sections, I started out sketching ideas with paper and pencil to come up with visuals for the various aspects you see in the infographic above. This includes different aspects of hunting, such as their favorite foods as well as one of the great white's preferred hunting methods called "breaching," as well details about the number of teeth they have, their size, life cycle, world range, status, and ability to smell. The sketches I used when coming up with the infographic are below.
